  • According to the American Association of Dermatology, 80 million men and women in the U.S. are struggling with hair loss. There are numerous causes of hair loss, that may need a work up and medical diagnosis in men and women. Some causes of hair loss can be reversible such as a medical conditions like thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency anemia, "crash diets", skin conditions such as lupus, alopecia areata and even lifestyle issues such as stress etc. However in the overwhelming majority of males with hair loss, the cause is typically due to hereditary androgenic alopecia, more commonly known as "male pattern baldness". These men are genetically susceptible to the presence of hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In women or female pattern baldness or hair loss, hormonal influences on hair loss is more complex, less understood and different from men. Androgenic alopecia (genetic pattern baldness) is the most common type of hair loss with up to 80% of white males & 40% of women developing it with age. Until recently, the only effective treatments were drugs such as minoxidil and finasteride as pills or topical liquid/cream. These usually require lifelong treatment and their benefits terminate on discontinuation of treatment. Other options at our practice location include or cosmetic enhancers such as sprays, powders to camouflage hair thinning and or hair pieces to restore hair such as glue adhesives or "weave" and clips. These do not treat the cause of hair loss process. Scientific studies done in recent years have shown that injecting platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and/or stem cells has a beneficial effect in inducing regrowth in androgenic alopecia hair loss, especially in thinning areas (see below). For lost scalp hair (areas of baldness) hair transplantation (see below) can offer a permanent solution for the right candidate.

  • Today's regenerative medicine for hair & skin can include platelet rich plasma, stem cells derived from autologous (own body) adipose fat tissue cells and other allografts (donor tissue) from amniotic fluid, placental and umbilical cord derivatives.

  • Platelet Rich Plasma is the most commonly and widely used for skin and hair restoration, also known as "PRP" is an injection treatment whereby a person’s own blood is used.

  • This novel modality is based on the pivotal discovery of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) in promoting angiogenesis and signals in cell interactions required for hair canal formation and growth of dermal mesenchyme, thereby opening newer perspectives for PRP in hair restoration and tissue remodeling. A fraction of blood (30cc-50cc) is drawn up from the individual patient into a syringe. This is a relatively small amount compared to blood donation. The blood is double spun i n a special centrifuge to separate its components ( Red Blood Cells, Platelet Rich Plasma, Platelet Poor Plasma and Buffy Coat) and later concentrate a pure PRP. The pure PRP is then activated with a small amount of calcium chloride, which acts as an activation agent and scaffold to keep the PRP where the injector intends to treat. Platelets are very small cells in your blood that are involved in the clotting and healing process. When PRP is injected into the affected area it causes a mild inflammation that triggers the healing cascade. As the platelets organize in the clot they release a number of enzymes to promote healing and tissue responses including attracting stem cells and growth factors to repair the damaged area. As a result new collagen begins to develop. As the collagen matures it begins to shrink causing the tightening and strengthening of the damaged area.

  • When treating injured or sun and time damaged skin tissue, they can induce a remodeling of the tissue to a healthier and younger state. The full procedure takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Generally 2-3 treatments are advised, however, more may be necessary for some individuals. Booster treatments may be done once a year after the initial group of treatments to boost and maintain the results.

  • PRP can be injected into the scalp with a syringe or can done as a microneedling, to apply the PRP. Microneedling produces thousands of tiny punctures in the scalp with a specific depth, through which the PRP can travel down to the hair follicles. There’s no downtime or special aftercare instructions. PRP skin and scalp treatments are usually initially done in a series of 3 sessions.

  • We can also use own stem cells such as LIPOGEMS® which is a live, concentrated adipose tissue transfer that has a preserved cell and tissue microarchitecture which contains the structural components and microvasculature including pericytes, adipocytes, stem cells, and other cells that are essential to help facilitate a healing environment.
