Is there a substitute for BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a biologic product that cannot be interchanged – or substituted – for another product. In fact, the FDA has stated BOTOX® Cosmetic is “non-interchangeable,” which means that its safety and effectiveness cannot be claimed by any other product. The potency – or strength – of BOTOX® Cosmetic is measured in scientifically defined units, and the FDA has concluded that a unit of BOTOX® Cosmetic does not equal a unit of any other product. People who are prescribed a biologic product have a right to know exactly what they are receiving. Be sure to ask which product you are being prescribed and why.
Will my face look overdone or unnatural?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a technique-sensitive treatment. You can trust BOTOX® Cosmetic to deliver subtle results when you are treated by someone who is licensed, trained, and a medical expert in facial anatomy. So you’ll look like yourself—only with less noticeable lines. No one should be able to tell you’ve had anything done. Compare the before and after pictures of real patients in our gallery, and see the difference for yourself.
Is BOTOX® Cosmetic only for women?
Not at all! Many men make BOTOX® Cosmetic part of what they do to care for their appearance. The number of men choosing treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic has risen fast – in the past three years alone, men have received over one million botulinum toxin treatments. When surveyed, the majority of men say they want to look good and they’re bothered by the changes they see in the mirror. 80% would choose to treat their crow’s feet first, while 74% would prioritize their forehead lines, and 60% would most like to treat their frown lines.*
Do I need to be over 40 to start using BOTOX® Cosmetic?
It's not your age that determines when BOTOX® Cosmetic is right for you, it's the severity of your lines. In fact, 64% of plastic surgeons report seeing a rise in cosmetic surgery or injectable treatments for patients in their early 30’s. The truth is, everyone's lines form differently. The timing can be influenced by a combination of factors, from cellular changes that may occur over time, to reduction of collagen, to genetic factors, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment. Whenever your lines start to bother you, go speak with your doctor. They can help you determine if treatment is right for you.
How much time does treatment take? Will it hurt?
The actual injection process takes a quick 10 minutes. Your specialist will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment areas for you. Then, some patients report that being injected with BOTOX® Cosmetic feels like a pinch. Your specialist may use ice to numb the treatment area. Or, if you are concerned about discomfort, your specialist may apply a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment. Treatment requires minimal downtime. So you can return to your daily routine immediately after you leave your specialist’s office.
Will I see results quickly? How long do treatment effects last?
You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours, with results lasting up to four months for moderate to severe frown lines. Remember that results vary from patient to patient though, so your physician will plan your next appointment based on your results and aesthetic goals. Start talking about your goals with a specialist today and find out what you could expect.
Is there a “generic” BOTOX® Cosmetic?
There is no such thing as a “generic” form of BOTOX® Cosmetic. Be wary of discount products or “cheap” BOTOX® Cosmetic. Medical formulations, potency, and approved doses vary among products, so no one product can take the place of another. FDA labeling states that BOTOX® Cosmetic is not interchangeable with any other product. If it doesn’t say BOTOX® Cosmetic on the vial, then it isn’t BOTOX® Cosmetic. BOTOX® Cosmetic has a one-of-a-kind formulation. And BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most widely researched and studied treatment of its kind. Backed by more than 15 years of clinical studies, the safety and efficacy of BOTOX® Cosmetic have been described in 495 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals. Finally, Allergan, the maker of BOTOX® Cosmetic, owns the entire manufacturing and packaging process, which helps ensure the reliability and safety of each vial.

At Vitality Medicine of New York we use a variety of fillers to restore volume to different areas of the face. Name brands include JUVÉDERM® RESTYLANE® and RADIESSE®.
Dermal fillers have truly revolutionized dermatology and medical aesthetics. A single treatment can give instant results and can be quite long lasting. Many of my patients have questions about fillers, and I have compiled this list below of some of the most frequently asked questions.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are biocompatible, injectable substances that create lift, add volume, and restore a more youthful appearance to certain areas of the face that show signs of aging.
What is in the filler?
The most common fillers are made of a soft gel consisting of non-animal hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that naturally occurs in the human body, and it is found in our skin. It helps hydrate and adds volume to the skin. It is naturally broken down by our own bodies. Dermal fillers consisting of hyaluronic acid include RESTYLANE®, JUVÉDERM® and BELOTERO®.
Other fillers, such as RADIESSE®, consist of synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in an aqueous gel. Calcium hydroxylapatite is a natural mineral component found in bone. These microspheres stimulate your own collagen. Over time, the body degrades the calcium hydroxylapatite and gel, leaving behind your natural collagen.
What are the benefits of fillers?
As we age, we lose volume in key areas of the face. This contributes to folds, wrinkles, hollow temples, thinning lips, sunken eyes, and an older appearance to the face. Fillers can be used to restore this volume loss, smooth out folds and wrinkles, and improve contours to achieve natural results without altering facial expression. Certain fillers can also be used to correct scars.
How long do the results last?
The effects are long lasting but not permanent. They last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on a number of factors including the patient’s age, area treated, type of filler used, quantity of filler used, and lifestyle.
Does it hurt?
Most patients experience only mild discomfort. A local anesthetic cream can be applied to the skin prior to the treatment for a more comfortable experience. Many of our fillers are also formulated with lidocaine to help minimize discomfort.
Is there any downtime?
No! You can go right back to your normal routine. However, I always advise my patients that they may have some bruising or swelling, so it is best not to schedule a filler appointment right before any important event.
What are the risks and side effects?
In general, dermal fillers are considered very safe. The most common reactions are redness, swelling, bruising, itching, and tenderness. These are typically mild and resolve spontaneously in 1-7 days for most patients. Other side effects are very rare.
Will I look natural?
When fillers are used in the appropriate amount and placed in the right location, the result is a beautiful, natural, youthful outcome. Fillers are not meant to create totally different features. In the hands of an experienced provider that has extensive knowledge of facial anatomy, the outcome simply enhances one’s own facial features.
Which filler do I need?
The choice of filler depends on the individual patient, their treatment goals, and personal facial anatomy. Schedule an appointment for a consultation to discuss your unique treatment regimen.
STEM CELL FACE LIFT
WHAT ARE PRP “VAMPIRE FACIALS”?
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Facials also known as “Vampire” Facials involve an all natural procedure that improves the quality of your skin and helps achieve similar goals that are acquired through non-organic procedures such as botox, derma fillers, and surgery. The procedure involves extracting platelets from the patient’s blood and inserting the PRP into the face using microneedling. The PRP consists of stem cells and growth factors which increases collagen production. The treatment reduces the appearance of wrinkles, heals acne scarring, corrects uneven skin tone, diminishes indentations and sun spots, and improves overall skin health. There is little to no risk with the treatment because it is your own body’s natural material!
PRP FOR HAIR RESTORATION (MICRONEEDLING)
Androgenic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss with up to 80% of white males & 40% of women developing it with age. Until recently, the only effective treatments were drugs such as minoxidil and finasteride, or hair transplants. Scientific studies done in recent years have shown that injecting platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has a beneficial effect in inducing regrowth in androgenic alopecia hair loss.
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune-related disease that causes patchy bald areas, & studies have shown improvement with PRP treatments in this type of hair loss.
Platelets, which are cells in our blood, contain different types of growth factors and PRP is the concentration of those platelets in plasma, the liquid portion of blood. The effects of PRP on hair loss are thought to be due to effects of the platelet growth factors on the hair follicles. PRP is obtained by drawing a small blood sample or fat tissue (adipose) & then spinning the tubes to concentrate the platelets.
Rather than inject the PRP into the scalp with a syringe, our estheticians use microneedling, which is an almost painless technique, to apply the PRP. Microneedling produces thousands of tiny punctures in the scalp with a specific depth, through which the PRP can travel down to the hair follicles. There’s no downtime or special aftercare instructions.
PRP scalp treatments are usually initially done in a series of 3 monthly sessions, with touchups recommended yearly or more often if desired. Schedule a consultation to determine if you are a candidate for PRP hair restoration.
